MCC codes, aka Merchant Category Codes, are assigned to businesses to help banks identify a transaction. The code a merchant receives will depend on their business model/industry. For example, fast-food restaurants will receive and MCC of 5814, whereas financial institutions will receive the code 6012.
This helps the banks distinguish the market they are in and, therefore, the risk involved.
